Photo: Chris MaielloChris Maiello will begin his second season as Head Swimming/Diving Coach and Aquatics Director. In his first season as head coach, the men's program finished 8th in NCJAA and the women's program finished 7th. The cavaliers also broke seven school records. A former All-American and scholastic head coach, the New York native joins the Darton College Physical Education/Coaching staff to lead the intercollegiate swimming programs. He will also serve the college community as Darton College’s Aquatics Director and oversee the day-to-day operations of the Cavalier Natatorium. The facility was part of a $12 million dollar renovation and expansion of the Physical Education/Athletic complex. The pool itself is a ten lane competition facility with two 1 Meter and 1 Three Meter springboards.

Maiello spent last season as the Assistant/Interim Head Coach for both the Men’s and Women’s swimming programs at the University of Rochester (NY). While at the University of Rochester, the Yellow Jacket swimmers broke 9 school records and qualified athletes for the NCAA Division III championship meet. The University’s swim team also had a boost in participation during this time. The men’s team grew largely due to the 13 member recruiting class in 2006. Along with his major recruiting responsibilities, he directed the sprint freestyle workout groups. In the Liberty League conference, Rochester’s women placed 2nd out of 8 teams and the men placed third, their best combined finish in seven years.

Before his stint with the University of Rochester, Maiello was the Head Coach at Amsterdam High School from 2002 to 2005. During his tenure, he guided the school to a cumulative record of 20 – 16 and A.H.S. improved its results in the Section II Championships, going from 15th of 17 teams to sixth of 17 teams. His swimmers also broke three relay records and one individual school record.

His experience also includes coaching on the club level at Albany, NY (Sidney Albert Albany Jewish Community Center) and Amsterdam, NY (Amsterdam Sea Rams USA Swim Club). Maiello was the Aquatics Director and Head Swimming Coach at the Sidney Albert Albany JCC. He also served as an assistant age group (senior group) swim coach for the Amsterdam Swim Club instructing boys and girls ages 8 - 18. For his efforts, Maiello was selected to the North East Zone team coaching staff in 2005.

As a competitive swimmer, Maiello earned All-American honors in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle events at Hartwick College. He won the New York State Championship in the 100 yard breaststroke in 2002 and the 200 yard freestyle in 2001. When he finished his career, he held Hartwick records in the 100, 200, and 500 yard freestyles plus the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Maiello was awarded a B.A. in Business Management from Hartwick College in 2001 and is in progress on a M.S. in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama.
