Darton State College Interim President Dr. Paul Jones announced his appointment of Lea Henry as Interim Athletics Director at a press conference early June at Darton.
“I am excited to announce the appointment of Lea Henry to athletics director,” Jones said. “She’s highly respected and with 15 years in college athletics, she’s more than ready to take on this role.”
Henry will continue to coach the Lady Cavaliers Basketball program. She replaces Dr. Mike Kiefer, who after eight years as athletic director at Darton, is taking a new role as Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs.
"I am excited about this opportunity,” Henry said. “What really pushed me in this decision was the fact that we have a tremendous staff of hard-working individuals in Darton College Athletics. If you just look at the accomplishments of our sports teams over the years, it’s phenomenal, and it’s a continued level of success.”
She added that the coaching staff will be tapped for their talents.
“I know from my years as an administrator that you have to be a good delegator,” she said. “I’m looking forward to delegating and getting our people more involved.”
Henry brings a strong athletics background into her new role. As an athlete, she was a 4-year starter at the University of Tennessee and led USA to an Olympic Gold Medal as a point guard in 1984. She took on a head coaching role at Mercer from 1990 – 1994 before becoming head coach at Georgia State University, where she coached for 16 seasons before transitioning to Darton.
“We’re pleased with the way she’s led our basketball program since her hire in 2011,” Jones said. “I’m very proud of what she’s achieved throughout her career.”
