David Mann
Head Men's Cross Country Coach

Photo: David MannIn January 2008 David Mann begins his fourth year coaching at Darton College and, this fall, will take the new men’s and women’s cross country programs into their second seasons. Named Region XVII Coach of the Year and clinching a region championship in his first season as a cross country coach, Mann will continue to build the teams as national competitors.

Under Coach Mann’s leadership, Darton College Cross Country created a winning tradition and earned several honors during last fall’s inaugural season. Two runners were named on the All-Georgia (pooled from 2- and 4-year colleges across the state) Teams, five finished 1st Team All Region XVII, and three finished 2nd Team All-Region XVII. Two runners were named "Academic All-Americans" and the women's program became an "Academic All-American Team." All three of his transferring athletes are receiving full scholarships from universities.

Coach Mann began his coaching career at Darton College in 2005 when as an assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach he worked with Head Coach Ken Veilands to push the women’s team to its first NJCAA Region XVII Championship, Southeast District Championship, and national runners-up finish. The season brought a national-records-breaking 25 straight wins.

Women’s soccer garnered a 42-3 record during his two seasons with the program and men’s soccer had a winning record totaling 24-13-2. Mann coached 5 All-Americans and 13 All-Region XVII student-athletes in the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

Coach Mann’s newest challenge is to continue the development of competitive men’s and women’s cross country teams at Darton College. His experience building programs dates back to high school. He captained Southaven High School’s first soccer team during his junior year before competing in the state tournament in 1995. He played at Itawamba Community College during its first season. As a graduate assistant coach, he held a major role in creating men’s and women’s NCAA D-II soccer programs at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss.

During undergraduate study at DSU, Coach Mann served as reporter and copy editor of the student led-newspaper, The Delta Statement, and won awards for his journalism. He graduated from DSU with an undergraduate double major of English and journalism, and worked as a reporter, photographer and later as a business editor for a daily newspaper near Memphis, Tenn.
He returned to DSU in 2002 to assist in creating new sports programs and study health and physical education. He graduated in December 2004 with a master’s degree.

Coach Mann is an instructor in Darton College’s Physical Education Department. He teaches activity courses, fitness courses, Internet classes and lecture classes. He also serves as an academic advisor and works with Darton student-athletes to improve their writing skills in all subject areas. He is an active member of the American Alliance of Health and Physical Education, serves on several committees across the Darton campus, and is an American Red Cross licensed lifeguard and professional rescuer.

Mann enjoys fly-fishing, running, and plays soccer locally in his free time. He is a volunteer youth soccer coach at the local YMCA. He resides in Albany with his wife, Cynthia, who also works at Darton College in student services.
